A Novel Wave Absorbing System using Bioinspired Metamaterials

Abstract

Inspired by biostructures of the woodpecker, the goal of this research is to develop a novel wave absorbing system based on bioinspired metamaterials and understand how their hierarchical microstructures can lead to a transformative improvement for the broadband wave absorption. In this research, theoretical and numerical models as well as elaboration on material manufacturing processes and specific experimental set-ups will be developed to quantitatively evaluate the magnitude of enhanced wave mitigation performance and identify the optimal bioinspired metamaterial design.
