Surface Irregularity Effects on Laminar-Turbulent Transition - understanding the surface quality requirements for laminar flow on wings

Abstract

The objective of this project is understanding the surface quality requirements in terms of step/gaps and roughness for maintaining laminar flow on wings and to understand the different mechanisms involved in roughness-induced transition scenarios in two- and three-dimensional boundary-layer flows. This project is joint work with Prof Dan Henningson and Prof. Ardeshir Hanifi from KTH- Sweden, who are sending in a separate application for the funding request of the Swedish part. This efforts funds only the Brazilian part of the project. Note that there are substantial synergy effects of this common project and that this has been extensively discussed with the Research Officers at EOARD and SOARD, respectively.
