Freedom Optics: Novel Variational Methods for Design and Computation with Applications

Abstract

Most of the currently used conventional optical devices rely on lenses and mirrors which are rotationally or rectangularly symmetric or can be described by explicit formulas. This inherentlimitation excludes or makes highly inefficient their utilization in applications requiring efficient andaccurate control of radiation produced by nonsymmetric sources and distributed in a prescribedmanner over targets of arbitrary shape.
