Neural Markers of Situation Awareness - Mobile Brain/Body Imaging in Dynamic 3D Environments

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop and test a standardized experimental virtual reality (VR) platform that allows to systematically investigate the behavioral and neural dynamics underlying Situation Awareness (SA; Endsley, 1999). SA is important to understand operator behavior in dynamic and complex situations. SA can be described as an internalized mental model of the environment at a given moment requiring a significant amount of operator resources to perceive, understand, and predict changes in the environment. Approaches to quantify operator’s SA are mostly based on behavioral and subjective metrics that either quantify the results of SA or the subjective experience thereof. A promising alternative to measure ongoing changes in operator SA without task interruption are physiological methods that allow analyses of physiological changes accompanying SA. One of the most promising methods is electroencephalography (EEG) as it provides high temporal resolution for recording and analyzing human brain dynamics that directly underlie cognitive processes associated with SA.
