Advances in Metamaterials
Abstract
The field of Metamaterials has been at the cutting edge of science and engineering for two decades now, with many breakthrough results and a huge impact on basic research. It was advocated, very early on, that metamaterials will eventually have a large impact also on technology, and will offer applications that are superior to conventional technology. In essence, metamaterials are artificial materials with predesigned properties that are not found in nature, in fact, very often – properties that cannot exist in nature. But two decades have passed, and metamaterials did not yet fulfil the promise: they remain an active research area, but very few have reached the maturity of being transferred to industry. This proposal aims at actually fulfilling the promise of metamaterials. We, six teams of collaborating Israel-American groups, are proposing to work on new ideas that have a clear promise to be adopted by defense-related industry.
