Support for ASM International Teacher s Materials Camp in the Dayton Metro Region

Abstract

Funding is requested to partially support the annual Teacher’s Materials Camp located inDayton, Ohio. This camp program is organized by ASM International. The camp is a week-longhands-on experience for K-12 teachers who wish to expand their knowledge and expertise inSTEM topics, specifically in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. It is designed toequip teachers with skills that can be directly applied in their classrooms.The camp is provided free to teachers and is partially sponsored by the ASM InternationalMaterials Education Foundation. It takes place at a strategically selected K-12 school. While thecamp provides an overview of the field of Materials Science and Engineering, the heart of thecamp is the hands-on experiences that take up the majority of camp time. Over the course of aweek, teachers will process molten glass and sand-cast a metal part. They will fabricate ananomaterial and polymerize a monomer. This is only a partial list of the experiences that theASM Materials Camp provides. Teachers are also given matching curricular materials that canassist in the adoption of such activities and topics to their classrooms. ASM Internationalprovides the necessary supplies and a specifically-trained instructor who travels to Dayton forthe event. Local faculty provide logistical support.
