Dynasonde for advanced studies of TIDs and atmospheric gravity waves

Abstract

province of Argentina to provide the planned Traveling Ionospheric Disturbance Experiment (TID-Ex) with a capability of precision diagnostic of the wave activity at thermospheric altitudes. TID-Ex is emerging as a comprehensive Air Force Office of Scientific Research and National Science Foundation supported measurement and modeling program that will leverage significant existing resources to examine the hypothesis that Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) arise from Gravity Waves (GWs) propagating into the ionosphere/thermosphere from lower atmosphere sources. TID-Ex measurements will occur over and around the Drake Passage, including on Tierra del Fuego, on S. Georgia Island, and at several sites along the Antarctic Peninsula. This region represents a unique hot spot for the atmospheric wave activity. The proposed world-class research instrument combines the Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionosphere Radar (VIPIR, a modern multi-channel, high performance HF radar system) and the Dynasonde analysis software suite (providing precise characterization of many ionospheric parameters and a unique set of high-level inversion routine
