Creating Large Ultra-lightweight Mirrors Without Polishing

Abstract

The technology needed to generate precise glass mirrors for remote-sensing has not kept pacewith corresponding optical and IR sensor technology advances. This means that remote sensingsystems are currently limited by the cost of their optics. The technology described heredrastically lowers mass, cost, and fabrication time of energy collectors. This effort will createmeter-class non-abrasively polished optics while demonstrating exactly how larger optics of upto 8m diameter can be constructed for a large range of remote sensing problems.
