Validation of Multiscale Modeling and Design Platform for Protective Hybrid Composite Systems for Aerospace Structures

Abstract

The proposed research will develop an experimentally validated multi scale computational modeling platform for analyzing multi material composite structure. This composite structure is intended to provide protective shield assemblages in aerospace structures subject to impact threats in the form of missiles, projectiles, flying objects, space debris, etc. Multi scale computational models are to be developed relying on molecular dynamics and FEM, while the experimental studies will be carried out for material characterization along with model calibration and validation. Multi scale simulations will lead to effective design of hybrid multi material system for penetration failure resistant protective shields of light weight in high performance aerospace applications.
