Foundations of Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Correlations

Abstract

We propose to study the emergence of deterministic classical and thermal behavior of macroscopic systems from the microscopic quantum description of isolated systems. These are important problems in the foundations or statistical and quantum mechanics which still generate heated debates. They are also of great practical value for the development of quantum computers and simulators, which promise to generate the next computational revolution. We plan to critically study a recent proposal claiming that quantum correlations may explain such classical and thermal behavior as emerging from the description of a closed quantum system, via measurements of few observables.
