Probing energy , mass , and charge transfer reactions on the atomic level using the ion storage facility DESIREE.

Abstract

I will combine several novel experimental methods to build a fundamental understanding of the transfer of charge , energy and mass in collisional reactions. We aim at a better understanding of how small and large molecules are formed and processed in atmospheric and combustion plasmas. The Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment (DESIREE) facility located at Stockholm University uniquely allows for studies of interactions between cations and anions at low and well defined internal temperatures and centre of mass collision energies down to about 10 K and 10 meV, respectively. Control over the reaction environment means that any desired information, for examples: reaction cross sections and fragment populations, can be obtained over many of the conditions needed to accurately model plasmas where these processes are important. This proposal highlights how this facility, which is the only one of its kind currently in the world, can play a crucial role in studying neutralising reactions relevant to Air plasmas related to both laser ignition and plasma assisted combustion, and Plasmas generated around re entrant space vehicles.
