RESPECT: Robot innEr SPEeCH for Trust
Abstract
The project RESPECT investigates the strategic coupling of cognitive robotics modeling and empirical human robot interaction experiments to analyze the role of inner speech in the development of trust interactions between humans and robots. The research will take direct inspiration from psychology studies on inner speech in human self consciousness. The project will start by specifically investigating and implementing the psychological model of inner speech proposed by Alain Morin to test its validity in the establishment of trust interaction between humans and robots. The model will analyses suitable mechanisms of inner speech as the social milieu; the physical environment; the role played during problem solving; the role played in the information on internal states. In the proposed project, human robot interaction experiments will investigate the role of the robot inner speech in human participants building and sustaining trust in robots. Experiments will be conducted with the humanoid robot platform Pepper and with the platform NAO. These empirical studies will inform and constrain the design of a cognitive architecture for the building of trust relations in autonomous robots. Such an architecture will be used to control the robots behavior and strategies necessary to support the building of a trust relationship with humans.
