Cognitive Decision Making Support for Avionics Analytics

Abstract

Air Traffic Management (ATM) is getting complicated as aircraft pilots and Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) have to deal with unprecedented airspace situations such as progressively sophisticated avionics systems, densely occupied airspaces, and inexorably adverse weather conditions. They must make decisions by prioritizing flight trajectories, safety, and messaging while cross checking vulnerable information coming from the different sources, including data from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A Decision Support System (DSS) based on knowledge representation (ontology) can facilitate the interaction between aviators and ATCs to make complex decisions in the context of data, feature, and information uncertainty. The research corresponds to the Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems (DDDAS) paradigm for dynamically integrated computation and instrumentation in feedback control loops.
