LIMITATIONS AND POSSIBILITIES OF QUANTITATIVE MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION AND MODELLING

Abstract

The proposed workshop is aimed at developing our understanding of the possibilities and limitations of quantitative materials characterization and modeling. By bringing together experts in either, or both, characterization and modeling, the possibilities for integrated computational materials science and engineering may be more readily realized, and the areas that need attention because of limitations are exposed. The structure of the workshop is such that there are three built in discussion periods of 30 minutes per day, which provides the most optimum and efficient way to engage the delegates in deliberations of what is possible and what is not regarding characterization and modeling. This program structure is based on the highly successful set of workshops held annually in the town of Bernkastel-Kues, Germany, where unprecedented levels of discussion have been effected. It has been arranged that the proposed workshop be addended to the bi-annual conference of the Microscopy Society of Southern Africa (MSSA), which will be held in Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa, during December 1st-5th, 2019. In this way, the delegates to the MSSA conference will be able to attend the proposed workshop, and this will provide an unprecedented opportunity for a significant number of young scientists in Southern Africa.
