(DURIP) INTEGRATION OF BIOLOGICAL TOOLS TO DISCOVER, DEVELOP AND UNDERSTAND THE BIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL SIGNALING PATHWAYS IN BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH AT CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY

Abstract

Claflin University (CU) is requesting funding for the acquisition of much needed instruments and accessories for upgrading the Molecular Virology Laboratory (MVL) and establishing a new Plant Pathology Laboratory, as we have two new faculty members in the Department of Biology, Dr. Lillianne Harris-Wright (Cellular and Molecular Biologist) in MVL and Dr. Mihir Mandal (Plant Biologist) in James S. Thomas (JST) Science Center. This funding will help the PI (Dr. Samina Assanie-Shivji) and two Co-PI’s (Dr. Harris-Wright and Dr. Mandal) to achieve their goals to (1) help students in mastering the concepts of molecular mechanisms of encephalitis, blood vessel formation/vascular biology, and plant biology so that they may gain an understanding and appreciation of the how biological and biochemical pathways interact with each other and their hosts; (2) the training will increase individual understanding in generating a highly robust understanding of microbiology, molecular and cell biology, genetics, plant metabolomics, and plant genetics using different techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR),
