Travel Support for Students to Attend 2020 DAMOP Conference

Abstract

This proposal is for support for student participation in the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (APS DAMOP) to be held June 1 to June 5, 2020 in Portland, Oregon. The conference attracts well over one thousand participants. Nearly half of these are students (mostly graduate students). Support is needed to ensure the participation of a large and diverse group of students, and to help foster the interchange of scientific information between graduate students and more established scientists. The student support will make a substantial contribution to the education and training of future scientists and the nation’s high-tech workforce. Students with a background in atomic, molecular, and optical physics will acquire a broad range of knowledge and skills that enable them to contribute to many areas of science and technology. Due to its influence on the creativity and productivity of each individual DAMOP attendee, the APS DAMOP conference series is of outstanding importance to the vitality of atomic, molecular, and optical physics in the United States. It is particularly important for students to learn about other researchers’ perspectives, approaches, and results related to the students’ interests. The exchange of ideas, methods, and techniques in face-to-face interactions is essential to advancing theoretical and experimental AMO physics.
