Hot Magnetized Plasma Acceleration Devices and Modes for Agile Plasma Thrusters

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to provide both high specific impulse and high thrust modes, throttled between the two while processing a common propellant, in order to provide dual-mode operation. The research explores the development of a plasma thruster that mimics the operation of a conventional rocket deflagration, the mode of operation (detonation or deflagration) depends on the gas feeding-filling time with respect to the breakdown time. The objective is to demonstrate sustained operation through repetitive pulsing of the deflagration mode of an electromagnetic plasma gun and the ability to operate between repetitively-pulsed deflagration and detonation regimes.
