SUPPORT FOR THE 2020 NORTH AMERICAN MEETING OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR MICROBIAL ELECTROCHEMISTRY AND TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
This proposal requests funds to partially support the 2020 meeting of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (NA-ISMET), to be held at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California during November 18-20, 2020. ISMET is the only ociety dedicated to the full range of fundamental microbial electrochemical research and technology applications, and is the home organization for researchers from widely diverse backgrounds, including biophysicists, microbiologists, chemists, and engineers. The funds requested will ensure a diverse range of successful researchers attend the conference, increasing the quality of research presented and the impact of this conference on understanding biological electron transfer processes in microbial systems – areas that are currently supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). The main objective of the NA- ISMET 2020 meeting is to link together this interdisciplinary group of researchers to discuss cutting-edge advancements in microbial charge transfer focusing both on basic science (redox biophysics-biochemistry, microbiology, biofilms, electrochemistry) and applied systems (bioelectronics, microbial electrosynthesis, microbial fuel cells, environmental remediation). The analysis and application of novel microbial electron transfer components is an area that is currently supported by AFOSR. Part of the AFOSR funds will be used to fund travel for speakers, with the remainder used to lower the registration costs with emphasis on students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career faculty.
