Laser and Spatial Light Modulators for Ultrafast Automatic Image Recognition Using an Opto-Electronic Correlator

Abstract

The items of equipment we are requesting to purchase under this proposal will be used in carrying out experimental work under a project currently supported by AFOSR, entitled, Rotation, Shift and Scale Invariant Ultrafast Automatic Image Recognition Using an Opto-Electronic Correlator. Under this project we have been investigating the feasibility of realizing a hybrid opto-electronic correlator that combines techniques from analog holographic storage, digital holography, and on-chip signal processing to produce an ultrafast automatic image recognition system, with a correlation speed of few microseconds per database image, nearly three orders of magnitude faster than the best current alternative using Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Furthermore, we are combining Polar Logarithmic Transform (PLT) with optical Fourier Transform (FT), rendering the correlator insensitive to spatial shift, angular orientation and scaling.
