(DURIP) HUMANOID ROBOTICS PLATFORM FOR INVESTIGATING THE SENSORIMOTOR BASIS OF COMPOSITIONAL REASONING

Abstract

The PIs propose to purchase a humanoid robot platform that will support an ongoing, multifaceted research program to investigate the sensorimotor basis of compositional reasoning. The human brain s remarkable capacity for generating intelligent behavior comes from its ability to reason symbolically--exploiting the power of abstract reasoning to solve complex, goal--?directed, long--?horizon tasks that would be much too complex to reason about at the level of raw sensorimotor data. The central question behind the study of embodied artificial intelligence is therefore- what properties should an agent s sensorimotor substrate have, to enable it to capably handle low--?level motor control while also simultaneously supporting abstract, compositional reasoning?
