Decoherence of Electronic Spin Current- Weak Ferromagnets as Model Systems

Abstract

Many emerging devices for computing and communications applications make use of angular momenta (spins) carried by electrons. How long spins stay aligned (coherent) in real materials is important for the operation of these devices, but the basic connection between spin coherence and material properties is poorly understood. This project will uncover the fundamental physics of coherent spins moving through ferromagnetic metals, which are workhorse materials for advanced spin-based computing and signal generation.
