Experimental and theoretical investigation of plasma dynamics relevant to the solar corona

Abstract

Overall: The research will be performed by Caltech Professor Paul M. Bellan as Principle Investigator supervising one graduate student. Bellan and the graduate student will investigate fundamental phenomena associated with the eruptions of magnetized plasma structures on the solar corona, and, in addition, the magnetized plasma that these eruptions eject into interplanetary space. The research will employ a combination of laboratory experiments and theoretical models. The research effort will emphasize the exploration of how the macro scale of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) physics interacts with the micro scale of physics involving Hall terms and finite electron inertia. The proposed research program will have the following detailed objectives in order of emphasis:
