QUANTIFYING PROBABILITIES USING OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES
Abstract
The effort is to quantitatively assess the impact of uncertain parameters within mathematical optimization programs, with particular emphasis on networks. As the DoD and economies in general are becoming more reliable on networks, it is becoming increasingly important that their merits and vulnerabilities are understood. Links between nodes of a communications-materials network can fail, and these failures adversely affect performance. Given known probability distributions for which the links can fail, the desire is to determine the overall probability that the network is able to satisfy pre-specified minimum thresholds of flow. These overall probabilities define the reliability of a network, and are critical when making decisions as to design and enhancement.
