(SURI) SPACE OBJECT UNDERSTANDING AND RECONNAISSANCE OF COMPLEX EVENTS (SOURCE)
Abstract
This project performs fundamental research associated with developing a next-generation Space Domain Awareness (SDA) framework, known as Space Object Understanding and Reconnaissance of Complex Events (SOURCE). This will be accomplished through transformative outcomes involved in multidisciplinary fields to improve SDA within the geostationary (GEO) belt, and then extend the methods to the entire cislunar sphere (i.e., XGEO). The work is focused on delineating between what is probable (higher risk) versus what is possible (more operational). The team’s approach is to significantly expand the research envelope, which includes developing new analytical and computational approaches leading to scalable algorithms, as well as investigating new sensor modalities with meaningful data-information fusion, to provide a revolutionary SDA capability to overcome both XGEO challenges and future SDA challenges within the GEO-belt. Our multi-institution team is led by a truly diverse group of researchers (gender and race) with experience at both classified and unclassified levels, and significant technical expertise in astrodynamics, stochastic estimation, optimal control, data fusion, machine learning, characterization and sensing phenomenologies. The team possesses a track record of productive collaborations with AFRL scientists and multi-university teams to ensure the success of the project. Beyond the core team members, an Industrial Advisory Board will be formed that includes several for-profit companies and nonprofit university entities to provide guidance on operational needs and benchmark research advances. Most importantly, this collaborative research will enhance the technical workforce by involving students as active participants in all levels of the basic research, as well as its maturation and transition to advance the state of practice.
