SCIENTIFIC-GRADE WIND TUNNEL FOR NDSU ADVANCED UNSTEADY AERODYNAMICS RESEARCH

Abstract

The scientific-grade closed-loop wind-tunnel requested is a testing instrument used for aerodynamics research that allows the air flow to have specified profile characteristics across a test section including a specified speed up to 100 m-s at various turbulence levels. High-fidelity experimental data can be collected from models in the test section that can then be used to perform real world analyses and simulation validations. Through the scaling of the model and use of dimensionless numbers of the fluid stream conditions, many scenarios of interest can be evaluated. After rescaling the results, an understanding of real-world conditions would be known with high fidelity. Wind tunnels come in two core varieties open or closed loop. Open meaning the air that is moved by the fan comes from the space the tunnel occupies and then is pulled or forced through the test section, then diffused back to the space. Closed loop systems recirculate the air with in the tunnel. These systems consist of a fan which moves the air, a test section and ductwork. The air is conveyed from the fan to the test section and then back. The closed loop variation requested in this proposal is shown in the following Figure 1 from the vendor (Aerolab). Much experimental research targets the validation of high-fidelity numerical simulations and the tuning of the transition and turbulence models from the experimental data. It is paramount that the experimental data is high-fidelity as well. In line with this philosophy, the scientific-grade, reliable, robust, and consistent wind tunnel proposed in this DURIP proposal would allow accomplish the various endeavors as described in this narrative.
