2022, 2023, AND 2024 US FRONTIERS OF ENGINEERING SYMPOSIA
Abstract
The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) requests $50,000-year for 3 years to provide support for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 US Frontiers of Engineering (US FOE) Symposia. The 2022 US FOE will be held September 21-23, 2022, at Amazon in Seattle, WA; the 2023 symposium at the University of Colorado Boulder. The 2024 symposium location has not been selected but may be held at the National Academies’ Beckman Center, in Irvine, CA. NAE established the Frontiers of Engineering program to build US innovative capacity and enhance networks among early-career engineers. The activity brings together a select group of highly accomplished early-career engineers, typically within 12 years of their terminal degree, from industry, academia, and government labs to discuss pioneering technical work and leading-edge research in various engineering fields and industry sectors. The goal is to facilitate an interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge and methodology that could lead to collaboration across fields. There has always been cross-fertilization among engineering disciplines and across engineering fields. However, the nature of emerging technologies and how they fit together to create products and processes that drive economic growth has (1) made the need for engineers to understand each other’s disciplines more acute, and (2) enhanced the value in that interaction, particularly among those developing and using new technologies. FOE symposia provide an opportunity for exchange among a truly interdisciplinary group, thereby facilitating cross-fertilization to help engineers better meet the challenges they face in creating products and processes that benefit society. Attendees will be exposed to new knowledge in their own field as well as techniques and approaches in other fields that they may be able to utilize in their work and share with colleagues. There is potential for advancement of knowledge at both the individual and institutional level. US innovative capacity is strengthened through these exchanges.
