MAGNETIZED HIGH-FREQUENCY EXCITED PLASMAS FOR RAREFIED AIR IONIZATION IN AIR-BREATHING ELECTRIC PROPULSION

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to achieve a sound theoretical framework for the analysis of molecular gas plasmas, specifically in air and air-like mixtures, under highly rarefied conditions, to develop a new rarefied molecular gas ionizer concept that is specifically optimized for the breakdown and ionization of air-like molecular gases, and investigate two-stage air breathing electric propulsion that incorporates the new ionizer with an acceleration stage. Studies will be done through high-fidelity computational modeling and analysis.
