A VARIATIONAL THEORY OF AERODYNAMICS

Abstract

The classical theory of aerodynamics by Kutta and Zhukovsky, though lasted for more than a century, is quite restrictive: the body must have a sharp edge (only one), it must be at the rear end, and the flow must be steady. The problem stems from the mathematical puzzle that Euler’s equation, which govern the dynamics of ideal fluid, does not possess a unique solution in two dimensions.
