(STEM) ADVANCED MATERIALS TRAINING FOR AUGMENTING AIR FORCE INFRASTRUCTURE RESILIENCE

Abstract

UM’s undergraduate research experience will focus on providing motivated undergraduates from underrepresented demographics opportunities to perform research in interdisciplinary sciences that directly meet the needs of the USAF. Oftentimes we see students “Don’t know what they don’t know”, meaning, they don’t know the challenges we face, career paths we can create, or interests they can pursue. This program hopes to fix some of that by highlighting the experiences, resources, and rewards accompanying a relevant research career in the armed services, specifically addressing critical USAF needs on the ground, air, and outer space. The Undergraduate Research Experience objectives can be defined as follows: (a) Learn the theory, applications, and necessary skills associated with the scientific theory – monitored by at least (2) faculty. (b) Necessary skills like critical thinking, problem solving, strategizing, decision-making with limited information sets will be discussed and practiced. (c) Learn about USAF and DoD internship and mentorship programs and careers as follows: I. Department of Defense (DoD) National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow Program (NDSEG) II. The Air Force Premier College Internship Program III. The Air Force Research Laboratory Scholars Program (AFRL) IV. Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) (d) Understanding, dissecting, and analyzing the importance of contemporary issues by engaging in monthly seminars on research-related topics led by: I. Technical researchers (USAF Scientists and Engineers; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)) II. Representatives from policy-making agencies and local communities (Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); Miami-Dade Office of Resilience) (e) Experience professional growth and prepare for a STEM USAF relevant career by actively participating in a series of "How-To" workshops (f) Strengthen communication skills by presenting their research at regular project intervals as well as at an in-house conference
