EXPLORATION OF NEW LASER-PLASMA DOMAINS

Abstract

As a follow on to our current BRI-5 program (FA9550-15-1-004) on the development of multi - kilowatt fiber lasers, we propose the use of one of these lasers to explore a new domain of high energy laser (HEL) interaction with solid materials. This domain incorporates various highrepetition rate pulsed lasers to augment the materials interaction process towards more efficient materials ablation. We propose an initial experimental and theoretical study involving both nanosecond and ultrafast laser pulses. The project will utilize our advanced facilities and diagnostics for laser and plasma physics in addition to modelling the complex laser interaction and plasma physics with codes in our possession.
