(DURIP) ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING MACHINE TO FACILITATE RESEARCH ON THE PROCESS CONTROL OF PRINTED STRUCTURES FOR USE IN WIND-TUNNEL EXPERIMENTS
Abstract
The purchase and installation of an open additive manufacturing machine (AMM) at the Applied Research Institute (ARI) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) would facilitate and enable significant research and educational benefits across campus. The focus area of the PI, Dr. Ehrhardt, includes the thermal/mechanical characterization and testing of component level structures in supersonic and hypersonic wind-tunnels including pre- and post-test structural model updating and material characterization. This area, coupled with the expertise in additive manufacturing (AM) established at ARI, would significantly increase the understanding and development of innovative hot-structures for USAF inatmosphere hypersonic vehicles through AM.
