Modeling and testing of plasma effects on orbiting space debris for improved Space Situational Awareness

Abstract

The investigations will focus on three major areas, namely, (i) carrying out a detailed study of the debris charging process using analytic modelling as well as particle-in-cell simulations (ii) delineating the physical characteristics of nonlinear electromagnetic precursors and wake structures excited by the debris objects, with particular emphasis on magnetic perturbations and (iii) development of a methodology and prescription for carrying out ground based as well as space based experiments for validating the results and finding ways of implementing them for debris detection and tracking.
