Effect of gaps and bumps on Laminar-Turbulent Transition in boundary layers

Abstract

Boundary layer laminar-turbulent transition is of great concern to aircraft. The vehicle surfaces contain several imperfections which can affect transition. Gaps and bumps are canonical imperfections which still present open questions with regard to transition. Gaps in particular involve very complex phenomena and are among the least researched imperfection. Gaps and bumps can affect the growth of Tollmien-Schlichting waves or cause by-pass transition. For gaps, different phenomena can cause by-pass transition. The project aims at understanding the underlying physics of the different effects that gaps and bumps can have on transition to turbulence in subsonic and transonic two-dimensional boundary-layers.
