Full field scanning wave field measurement system for advanced fluid-structure interaction characterization

Abstract

This proposal aims to establish a unique experimental platform at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that will advance our understanding of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) between a multitude of aerodynamic flows and modem materials such as mechanical metamaterials and phononic media. This system will fuel further advancements to current AFOSR efforts on phononic flow control and other proposed efforts to AFOSR and will enhance research related education by training students in this new interdisciplinary research area that is of growing interest to the DoD. The PI and co-Pis have a history of collaborating with AFRL and will leverage these relationships to facilitate technology transition to the DoD laboratories. The proposed equipment will directly advance multiple AFOSR programs, including the Unsteady Aerodynamics and Turbulent Flows program and Multiscale Structural Mechanics and Prognosis directorates.
