Optimization-guided Synthesis of Composite Flight Structures with Unprecedented Strength and Fracture Resistance

Abstract

This project aims to develop a state-of-the-art design framework and validation strategy to create next-generation light-weight composite flight structures made of multiple materials with dissimilar properties to achieve improved strength, fracture toughness, and durability under dynamic environments. Flight structures extensively use composites for their unparallel performance under extreme environments. However, existing composite structures are mostly designed based on intuition and may leave out many designs with superior properties.
