Reaction Models for Catalytic Combustion of Hydroxylammonium Nitrate Based Liquid Propellants- Application of a HyChem Approach

Abstract

ASCENT is a tricomponent liquid propellant consisting of hydroxyl ammonium nitrate, water, and 2-hydroxylethylhydrazinium nitrate that has been targeted as a replacement for hydrazine monopropellant in thrusters of diverse sizes. The lack of simplified but physics-based reaction models is one factor that has hampered computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models from producing accurate simulations for guiding thruster design when using the ASCENT propellant. The objectives of this proposal are to develop ASCENT reaction models of different complexity ranging in size from those suitable for multidimensional CFD codes to those of significant detail to provide fundamental understanding.
