Student Travel Support for APS DAMOP Annual Meeting
Abstract
The Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (DAMOP) of the American Physical Society (APS) is seeking support for students enrolled in U.S. institutions to attend the 2023 annual conference, which takes place 5-9 June, 2023. The conference will be held in Spokane, Washington. The support we seek is towards travel costs to and from the conference site for competitively selected students. Funds for 20 such travel awards for $600 each, totaling to $12,000 is requested from AFOSR. Intellectual Merit The APS DAMOP conference series is of outstanding importance to the vitality of atomic, molecular, and optical physics in the United States, due to its influence on the creativity and productivity of attendees. It is particularly important for students to learn about other researchers’ perspectives, approaches, and results that relate to their own work. The exchange of ideas, methods, and techniques is essential to advancing knowledge in the field. Broader Impacts The APS DAMOP conference offers an opportunity for students to present their research results and to interact with scientists from the United States and the broader international community. For many graduate students enrolled in U.S. institutions, DAMOP is the first major scientific meeting that they attend and present at. As such, DAMOP plays a special role among the various conferences and workshops. In conjunction with the meeting, there will be, as in previous years, a one-day graduate student symposium to introduce students to modern topics in atomic, molecular, and optical physics. The student support requested in this proposal makes a substantial contribution to the education and training of future scientists. Students with a background in atomic, molecular, and optical physics acquire a broad range of knowledge and skills that enable them to contribute to many areas of science and technology.
