Architectures for Cognitive Intelligence

Abstract

The MIT PIs and Research Scientists (Dr. Randall Davis, Dr. Gerald Sussman, Dr. Boris Katz, and Dr. Henry Lieberman) are focused on a five year research set of investigations to define key theories and constructs that extend Architectures for Cognitive Intelligence. They continue the work of Marvin Minsky’s Society of Mind theories and Patrick Winston’s theories in his Genesis system. Minsky has suggested that the mind is composed of numerous agents, each with limited expertise. Some agents directly affect behaviors, others act as critics that modulate the applicability of other agents, and still others are critics on the critics. The challenge of AI is that so many levels of description are necessary to bridge the gap between high- and low-level approaches. The PIs suggest that maintaining a diversified portfolio of paradigms is the best route to placing a bet on the future. This is inspired in part by Minsky’s Society of Mind theory, which holds that a particular strategy - diversification and the ability to flexibly integrate top-down and bottom-up approaches - may be a key to organizing an AI architecture as well.
