Partial Support of the Committee on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences

Abstract

The Committee on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences (CAMOS) will undertake a vigorous agenda of activities for the next four years. CAMOS will play an active role as a convener and body of expertise for the atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) scientific community. An essential part of the Committee’s responsibilities is assessing progress on the AMO agenda delineated by the recent series of NASEM reports, including primarily the AMO2020 decadal report, Manipulating Quantum Systems- An Assessment of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics in the United States (AMO2020), and others such as Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers- Reaching for the Brightest Light (2018). CAMOS will provide stewardship for the AMO2020 decadal study by drafting short reports (by sponsor request); conducting semiannual focus sessions highlighting emerging areas of AMO research; identifying critical new developments for the field; developing National Academies activities in AMO; and serving as a conduit between the AMO community and the federal government. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies ) requests partial support for CAMOS from April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2027. The total estimated cost of the project for the forty-eight month period is $879,000 of which $293,000 is being requested from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). The remaining funds are being requested from other sources.
