Support for the New York City Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics

Abstract

The Graduate Center (GC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) will host a regional Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) January 19-21st, 2024. This event is one of 15 in the country running concurrently, the purpose of which is to address the issue of gender disparity in Physics education and career pathways. The estimated budget for this event is $72,075 and the goal of this proposal is to request $25,600 towards the cost of housing for students and speakers for this important conference. The GC is in an urban location and our participants will have a high percentage of first-generation, immigrant, and under-represented students, presenting both a small challenge but a great opportunity to change life trajectories for the better. The goals of this event include- (1) increasing awareness for undergraduate female students of the numerous career paths available with degrees in physics, (2) increasing resources to foster community and equity in physics research and career paths, and (3) increasing encouragement for continued pursuit of physics degrees and careers. These goals are in line with the mission of the AFOSR, which is to increase diversity in personnel and research ideas by encouraging young women and other underrepresented minority groups to seek advanced degrees and careers in physics or related areas of interests.
