Mass Spectrometry Facilities at North Carolina AandT State University

Abstract

Mass-spectrometric techniques occupy an important place in the everyday arsenal of a synthetic chemist. In this proposal, we highlight the acute deficiency of modern mass spectrometry equipment at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC AandT), country’s leading HBCU with a strong emphasis on STEM research. Securing access to a modern tandem liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometer (LC-Q-TOF) is vital for successful implementation of our current DoD AFOSR research project, “Structurally Controlled Synthesis of BCN Materials (Award 21RT0654). This project involves considerable synthetic effort at the organic-inorganic chemistry interface. On the daily basis, substantial amount of time is invested into identification of unknown reaction products, analysis of complex reaction mixtures, optimizing reaction conditions etc. All of those tasks can be streamlined considerably by the LC-Q-TOF instrument, allowing us to focus on the new and challenging aspects of this research project while minimizing distraction from routine analysis tasks that can instead be handled by modern instrumentation. We propose to acquire an entry-level LC-Q-TOF instrument to cover the needs of organic and inorganic chemists at NC AandT. This equipment will allow underrepresented minority undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research using modern instrumental tools that are viewed as daily essentials at most well-equipped synthetic labs across the world. Furthermore, this instrument will become an indispensable educational tool for the redesigned study program for the chemistry majors at NC AandT.
