Building Artificial Intelligence Research Capacity at the University of South Dakota

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI-ML) are rapidly changing the world in which we live. It guides our searches on the internet, helps drive our cars, and even turns off our bedside lights. Because it is intimately integrated into our lives, AI-ML must be developed and deployed ethically. The University of South Dakota is the state’s only public liberal arts university. It, therefore, is the only university in South Dakota with the breadth of academic offerings that can ensure both the technical and ethical development of AI-ML technologies. USD proposes to use funding from the Department of Defense Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Capacity Building program to add two faculty in AI-ML technology. USD has created a research environment where young faculty members can rapidly develop their research potential and quickly establish themselves as emerging leaders in their fields. This environment will be critical in developing USD’s AI-ML capacity and position us as a leader in ethical and effective AI-ML technology.
