Dedicated Electron Microscopy for Quantum, Hypersonic, IR, and Mechanical Materials
Abstract
PI Maria requests AFOSR support for a scanning electron microscope with multi-quadrant backscatter and secondary electron detectors, and an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer. The instrumentation will serve primarily an existing collection of DoD research programs in the Maria group, a set of emerging programs in the Maria group, and an existing set of DoD research programs in the Beese research group that shares lab space with Maria at Penn State. These existing, pending, and emerging programs are aligned and serve overarching Air Force and Space Force research priorities including- i. materials development for quantum information science; ii. materials development for hypersonic vehicles; iii. polaritonic platforms for Mid-wave IR detection, emission, and sensing; iv. nanoenergetic materials science; and v. structural alloy development and advanced manufacturing.
