Gleeble Acquisition for Physical and Mechanical Characterization of Structural Materials at Extremes

Abstract

This proposal seeks to acquire a Gleeble Physical Simulation System to characterize structural materials at thermo-mechanical extremes. This instrument will immediately support several DoD programs led by the PI, and many ongoing programs by the PI s collaborators, related to the design and evaluation materials in extreme environments. This instrument will fill a gap in mechanical testing capabilities at Northwestern, which are limited to isothermal testing below 1100 oC and low strain rates. In addition, the Gleeble is capable of physically simulating materials processing, such as forging, welding, bonding, casting and heat treating. These new capabilities will complement ongoing materials design working groups at Northwestern to elucidate processing strategies for next-generation structural ceramics, composites, and metallic materials.
