Evaluation of Event-Based Cameras for Velocimetry

Abstract

The proposed research aims to explore the use of event cameras, also known as neuromorphic cameras, for optical flow diagnostic experiments. An event camera operates on a fundamentally different principle when compared to the traditional cameras. Instead of capturing frames at fixed intervals, an event camera registers data only when an event, such as particle motion relative to the background, occurs. The sensor directly outputs a stream of asynchronous events in a microsecond resolution, each containing the location, intensity, and timing information of the detected changes. This makes it an excellent tool to capture transient and dynamic flow phenomenon.
