Testing and Evaluation Enabled Discovery of Multifunctional 2D Materials for Space Technology

Abstract

Proposed is a high-risk high-reward program of fundamental research to discover new lanthanide-containing 2D MXenes that, alone and combined with other 2D materials, can broadly impact important space-related technologies of DoD interest including- (1) quantum communication, using lanthanide ions as single photon emitters; (2) quantum phononics, transducing photonic information into long-lived phononic states; (3) anti-jamming lidar surveillance and detection, using efficient optical emission at multiple wavelengths; (4) X-ray scintillation to utilize Space born X-Rays; (5) magneto-optics for neuromorphic computing, quantum information storage, and sensing; (6) energy harvesting coupled to catalysis; (7) beam forming and manipulation for THz technology; and (8) optics and coatings for high power laser space technology.
