Research on Two-Dimensional (2D) Materials and Manufacturing for Electronics and Cyber applications

Abstract

The proposed research is a joint effort between a multi-university team and a small business to address a variety of research sub-topics in two-dimensional (2D) materials for electronics and cyber applications while providing critical readiness capabilities to cadets-midshipmen and hands-on laboratory experience to civilian students at participating universities. The research sub-topics include materials preparation, physical and chemical properties analysis, formation of different classes of the layered structures to form hybrid materials, simulation and modeling, scalable manufacturing, artificial intelligence aided growth and optimization, defect engineering and applications arising from the development of 2D materials. The multi-university team includes Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and mentoring universities. Collaborations will be organized based on the research capabilities of the large universities readiness to collaborate with smaller universities, particularly with HBCUs and MSIs, in sub-topic areas of interest to the basic research objectives of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), and the geographical locations of the institutions. Such partnerships will enable the opportunity for students from HBCUs-MIs and faculty at larger university facilities to engage in high quality research. And upon graduation, opportunities for the HBCU-MI civilian student s movement to larger universities for higher education increases while HBCU-MI cadet-midshipmen commissioned officers have the opportunity for promotion as they serve in critically needed technical areas.
