OSU-AFOSR Workshop on Extreme Light Science
Abstract
This proposal requests support for a two-day workshop on the topic of extreme light science at Ohio State University (OSU). The proposed workshop will focus on research opportunities being conducted at single PI laboratories (such as OSU and AFRL) and enable a synergistic dialogue between research scientists and program officers from AFOSR or other federal agencies. We anticipate inviting as keynote speakers the Directors from the four US extreme light mid-scale facilities that are being built and funded by the NSF. In addition, there will also be two keynote talks given by DoD scientists, additional invited talks, an open forum roundtable discussion, as well as a poster session. A second objective of the workshop is to connect the programmatic needs of federal sponsors with the research interest and capabilities of practitioners in the field. The extreme light workshop will be held July 18-19, 2024 at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The Co-Organizers are Prof. Louis DiMauro (Ohio State University, USA) and Dr. Andrew Stickrath (Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)). The workshop will be sponsored by the Institute for Optical Science (IOS) at OSU. IOS is supported by the OSU Office of Research and based on three foundational pillars of community building, research and education in the optical sciences. Researchers from neighboring colleges and universities will be invited. The thrust of the extreme light workshop is central to research funded by AFOSR, particularly in laser-driven plasma physics, ultrafast science, material science and directed energy. The requested AFOSR funds will be used to support the travel expenses for the keynote speakers and meals for the attendees. Participation in this workshop will benefit both researchers and AFOSR and other federal Program Managers as they discuss their current work and learn more about the goals-initiatives of each group. Roundtable discussion(s) on themes central to advancement of the extreme light frontier will be facilitated by challenging questions posed by the workshop organizers.
