Volatile Organic Compounds from Humans as Biomarkers for Stress
Abstract
Under normal physiological conditions, human beings are known to emit several hundred volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into their surrounding air via their skin and breath. The composition of these VOCs in the air are shown in the literature to depend on the subject s emotional state. Previous studies show that various modes of stress including anger, fear, and anxiety yield increasing and-or decreasing concentrations of specific VOCs in the air surrounding a test subject.
