Multilayer, Multimaterial, Multifunctional, Thermo-structural Coatings

Abstract

The focus of the effort is in enhancing the capabilities of modern day high temperature protective coatings: notably thermal and environmental barriers to address the emergent and urgent multifunctional requirements of temperature and environment. These thermal barrier and environmental barrier coatings (TBCs/EBCs) are complex, layered materials with dynamically evolving microstructures during high temperature operation. Beyond intrinsic materials attributes of temperature and phase stability, the coating microstructures play a veryimportant role in their performance which are largely optimized through novel processing schemes. For instance, process engineered porosity and interfaces offer both compliance and lower conductivity allowing these layered materials to operate in a thermal cyclic environment.
